" April Fools' Day 2019 :

British Unionist Loyalist Liars' Stupid Xenophobic Idiocy Triumph ? "

[ I EXPERIMENTED WITH A VARIETY OF WORDS AND PREFERRED ' LIARS ' TO ' LUNATICS.' ]

[ I AM THINKING OF THOSE ROMAN TRIUMPHS IN WHICH FOREIGNERS WERE EXECUTED. ]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_triumph

The Roman triumph (triumphus) was a civil ceremony and religious rite of ancient Rome, held to publicly celebrate and sanctify the success of a military commander who had led Roman forces to victory in the service of the state or, originally and traditionally, one who had successfully completed a foreign war. ... [ PLUNDER, CAPTIVES AND SACRED CATTLE WERE PARADED TO THE TEMPLES IN ROME - AND THEN SACRIFICED.]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caratacus

Caratacus (Brythonic *Caratācos, Middle Welsh Caratawc; Welsh Caradog; Greek Καράτακος; variants Latin Caractacus, Greek Καρτάκης) was a first-century British chieftain of the Catuvellauni tribe, who led the British resistance to the Roman conquest. ... After his final defeat he fled to the territory of Queen Cartimandua, who captured him and handed him over to the Romans. He was sentenced to death as a military prisoner, but made a speech before his execution that persuaded the Emperor Claudius to spare him. ... The legendary Welsh character Caradog ap Bran and the legendary British king Arvirargus may be based upon Caratacus. Caratacus's speech to Claudius has been a common subject in art. ... After his liberation, according to Dio Cassius, Caratacus was so impressed by the city of Rome that he said " And can you, then, who have got such possessions and so many of them, covet our poor tents ? " ...

[ CARACTACUS WAS A FAVOURED HERO AMONGST 18C REPUBLICANS IN WALES NOT ONLY BECAUSE HE DEFIED THE ROMAN EMPIRE BUT ALSO BECAUSE HIS NAME APPEALED TO THEIR ETHOS - " BELOVED FRIEND " ] [ OR " LOVING LEADER " ? ( CARA-DWG ? ) ]

... I know that Daf will not agree with that ... I felt however that a new thread ought to be started once Theresa May handed over The French Letter ... er ... was that only yesterday ? ... Well she did not handle it herself : she obviously does not want to end up with sticky fingers as well as having to experience this pain in the arse. ...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-39441207 [ VIDEO ]

Prime Minister Theresa May described the invoking of Article 50 as a "historic moment from which there can be no turning back", saying Britain would now make its own decisions and its own laws.

We have been overwhelmed by a filthy tide of BULLSXIT - both pro and anti - which has been barely worth commenting upon ... as it recedes let us look at what has been left behind ... mostly the kind of stuff which usually floats ... and it is not just in the UK ... this creepy " ALT-RIGHT " stuff is going global ... why ? ...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-39448615

A new generation of far-right activists are trying to get the Front National's Marine Le Pen elected as France's president.

... what I suspect is that France, England, Wales and America are showing the same symptoms : the places where this " ALT-RIGHT " is flourishing have no experience of the immigrants which they blame but they are experiencing poverty and unemployment and are living on handouts and suffering a loss of self-esteem which if they had they would not care about immigrants other than to feel generously disposed towards them ... it is this economic collapse which has led to a lack of self-respect which has led to a predisposition to a miserly and xenophobic outlook ... But there is yet another aspect of this : most of the poverty stricken rural areas and areas of industrial collapse are in receipt of handouts from the urban areas where the services economy is flourishing and paying the taxes to support them ... The latter is where the immigrants are - so bizarrely immigrants are in a sense the very people who are generating the wealth which those complaining about them are living upon in the form of various handouts ...

... If The People in Wales who subscribed to " ALT-RIGHT " were made to accept the logical consequences of their sentiments and sent off to make their own way in The World they would soon discover which side their bread had been buttered on and would be compelled by economic realities to acknowledge that they have been living upon the generosity of others : ditto incidentally for Nationalists who would be compelled to acknowledge how indebted The People in Wales are to The People in England - and yet also by extension The People in Britain are deeply indebted to The People in The World ... Hence I am an advocate of " Inter-dependence not Independence " because that reflects the reality of our relationships with The People in The World - and that is why we need to build global systems of government ( but I object to the standard proposals for a monolithic World Government : political systems should be determined by existing human relationships.) ... i.e. political systems should not be determined by geographical locations but by social relationships e.g. economic transactions - would you prefer your food supply to be under the political control of your local Cooperative or controlled by a capitalist supermarket ?

... By voting to " leave " Europe I believe that we have opted out of control of many things such as our food supply ...

Be Like the Fox: Machiavelli's Lifelong Quest for Freedom - Eric Benner

_____________________________

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Golden_Ass_(Machiavelli)

L'asino ( also called L'asino d'oro; English: The Golden Ass ) was an unfinished satirical poem of eight chapters written by the Italian political scientist and writer Niccolò Machiavelli in 1517. A modernized version of Apuleius' The Golden Ass ( rather than a translation of it ), it is written in terza rima. It also concerns the theme of metamorphosis, and contains grotesque and allegorical episodes.

[ IN MACHIAVELLI'S POEM L'ASINO D'ORO VARIOUS POLITICAL DEFECTS ARE DEPICTED IN THE GUISE OF ANIMALS WHICH ARE DECEIVED AND SO HERDED TOGETHER ... TO THUS BE LED OFF TO BE SLAUGHTERED ? ]

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=gx2l3vh2OtIC&lpg=PP1&pg=PP1&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false

" ... Therefore you must come with me
and follow the steps of this herd of mine
if you do not wish to die in these woods

And in order that Circe can not see the contour of your face,
and that you may come secretly, you will come
on all fours in the midst of this troop ... "

" ... with her left hand she carried through the forest a great light,
and with her right she held a horn with which she made music.

With her in the midst of the uninhabited plain were numberless animals following after her in order ... "

" ... Have you ever seen anywhere how a raging eagle moves, driven by hunger and fasting ? And how he carries a tortoise on high, that the force of its fall may break it and he can feed upon the dead flesh ?

So Fortune not that a man may remain on high carries him up, but that he plunges down she may delight, and as he falls he may weep. ...

... We see at last that in days gone by few have been successful, and that they have died before their wheel reversed itself or in turning carried them down to the bottom ... "

[ AND THAT IS THE IMAGERY FROM WHICH REPUBLICANISM DREW THE IDEA OF " REVOLUTION " - FROM " THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE " - WHICH IN A (T)AROT PACK IS THE CENTRAL TR(I)UMP(H) CARD LABELED " ROTA(T) " = WHICH WAS AN EDUCATIONAL GAME ABOUT THE POLITICS OF THE HIGHEST COURT IN MEDIEVAL EUROPE WHERE THE PARTICIPANTS WERE ROYAL LAWYERS VYING FOR " EQUAL " POSITIONS AROUND ... YES ... THE ROUND TABLE WHICH WAS KNOWN AS THE " WHEEL " = " ROTA " ]

Brexit: EU wants 'divorce bill' settled first - By Iain Watson, Political correspondent, BBC News

" A tale of two sentences, drafted in two different capitals, exposes the clear blue water between London and Brussels. ... In Theresa May's letter triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty she states: "We believe its necessary to agree the terms of our future partnership alongside those of our withdrawal from the EU.' ... But Donald Tusk responded today: "Starting parallel talks on all issues at the same time as suggested by some in the UK will not happen." ... Bluntly, the divorce bill would have to settled before talks on trade can begin. ... What's more, only one party to the break-up, the European Council, would decide if the settlement is good enough. ... "

Britain's Theresa May pens open letter to Europe - Monique El-Faizy - 30-03-17

" British Prime Minister Theresa May penned an open letter to the European people, which was published in six continential dailies on Thursday, including Le Parisien in France.

In the letter, May assured Europe that Britain’s decision to leave the European Union “does not signify in any way a rejection of the values that we have in common as Europeans. Nor is it an attempt to do harm to the Union, nor to any of the states within it. On the contrary, the United Kingdom wants the European Union to succeed and prosper.

In addition to Le Parisien, the letter appeared in The Irish Times, Rzeczpospolita in Poland, Dagens Nyheter in Sweden, El Pais in Spain, La Repubblica in Italy and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Germany.

“Our referendum was, in our view, a vote to re-establish our national self-determination. We are leaving the European Union, but we are not leaving Europe—and we want to remain partners and strong allies of France and of all our friends on the Continent,” May wrote. ... "

Reflecting upon what I have not written about " Brexit " in comparison to what The Hierarchy have not written about it ... which has been acres of newsprint, webpages and broadcast hours on television and radio ... I ought to be proud to have not written much : there has not been much to write about but The Hierarchy have dutifully written anyway ... Arguably what " Bullsxit " is demonstrating is how secretive The United Kingdom is - and illustrating that it is a Demockery : The Aristocrats long ago clothed themselves in the appearance of a modern political system by hiring The Democrats to serve their private interests and to pretend them to be The Public Interest. The reason why The Hierarchy have to babble away to fill up time and space when they have no knowledge of the facts and arguments involved is because none are being provided : The United Kingdom is not a political system at all but an anti-political system where such things are not divulged - not even in The Palace of Westminster, not even to members of the same party which is - putitatively - in the government.

There is of course one thing which they are proud to publicly declare : all of the laws which they are going to get rid of which were produced by the European political system - thousands of laws which protect us from pesticides in irradiated foods adulterated by other added chemicals ... provide us with cheap mobile phone calls ... universal electrical safety standards ... and of course we do not want human rights do we ? ... Perhaps that is what we ought to be talking about.

What is obvious is that The People in Wales were in a bad state and then in a slightly better one and now we can anticipate ourselves being in a worse state than ever before. But what is " The State " ?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=y1wn5CgiOho

Quentin Skinner - What is the State? The question that “will not go away”

[ I GOT AROUND TO LISTENING TO THAT LATER AND THOUGHT THAT HE PRESENTED A BALANCED ACCOUNT BUT PERSONALLY I THINK THAT HE FAILED TO ADDRESS THE VIEW THAT I HOLD WHICH IS THAT SOVEREIGNTY DOES NOT EXIST : ONLY THE LAW EXISTS AS A DESCRIPTION OF HOW WE AGREE TO ACT I.E. HOW TO BEHAVE WELL AND WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OTHERS IF YOU DO NOT ... I.E. LIKE BENTHAM I OBJECT TO LEGAL FICTIONS AND LOCATE THE STATE IN A SERIES OF CONCRETE CONTRACTS BETWEEN PEOPLE HENCE THE IDEA OF OVERTHROWING THE STATE OR SEIZING CONTROL OF IT IS RIDICULOUS - EXCEPT FOR THOSE WHO MISTAKE SUCH LEGAL FICTIONS FOR REALITIES : YOU CAN NOT SEIZE CONTROL OF THE STATE BY GAINING CONTROL OF THE ROYAL SEAL OR OF 10 DOWNING STREET ... AS A FICTION " THE STATE " HAS NO MORE REALITY THAN " SOVEREIGNTY " - " THE LAW " HOWEVER IS NOT A FICTION BUT A DESCRIPTION : THE TROUBLE STARTS WHEN PEOPLE START TRYING TO LEGISLATE TO MAKE THEIR FANTASIES INTO REALITIES ...

... For example : there is now lots of talk about how " The United Kingdom " is going to make its way in The World again because of " Brexit " and that in regaining our " Sovereignty " and re-asserting control over " The State " then The Democrats in Wales and Westminster will now be able to put everything right or at least enable all clear-thinking, common-sensical and vigourolliously patritotical folk to have a rude awakening from their daydreams about BULLSXIT ... To be honest I think that " The United Kingdom " is now less tangibly real than " The Magical Kingdom " in Disneyland Paris - which is at least entertaining ...

----------------------------

Later I listened to this one which is much the same but a little better -

Subject: Theresa May is under pressure to write to a deadline : why doesn't the government go to an essay writing company to get a student of politics to do it ?

Dear Private Eye,

http://repwblic.informe.com/viewtopic.php?p=5000#5000

I started to write a gag but although the idea is good I can not yet bring much imagination to this idea - but somebody might.

The idea is that the TWO YEAR LIMIT up until what I have dubbed " April Fools' Day 2019 - BULLSXIT " is a student deadline.

What students do now is get a part-time job to pay for their food, lodging, beer - and somebody in India to write their essays.

Given the time restrictions involved : why not have Theresa May etc on the line to something like an essay writing service ?

Given the fact that she left Gibraltar out of the EU letter perhaps it was actually written by a political student in - Spain ?

Regards,

David B. Lawrence

http://www.politico.eu/article/brexit-guidelines-talks-begin-with-show-of-unity-for-now/

By Jacopo Barigazzi 4/11/17, 10:10 PM CET

Brexit guidelines talks begin with show of unity (for now)

‘The more details, the more problems.’

EU countries will make only small changes to the European Council’s draft guidelines on Brexit, including making the wording on citizens’ rights clearer, according to two diplomats who on Tuesday took part in the first talks on the text by government officials. ... Another change will be to spell out the European Parliament’s role in negotiations, which was not mentioned at all in the draft guidelines published two weeks ago — although it’s unclear if this will appear in the next draft. ... ... ... There were no changes mentioned on territorial issues such as the future of Gibraltar but this will require many rounds of bilateral talks, diplomats said. ... ... Government officials will meet again on April 24, a few days before an extraordinary summit of 27 EU leaders will approve the final text on April 29. ...

I have actually got my friend's paper copy here to browse over and that is what prompted me to consult the online version ... or is it versions ? ... This is the version for The People in The USA ... poor sods ...

By Edward-Isaac Dovere 04/13/17 05:17 AM EDT

Prediction prof: Trump will be impeached

" ... Lichtman is clearly no Trump fan, writing at length about his discomfort with Trump’s opposition to the Paris Climate accord. He refers to Trump’s travel ban as “dimming the torch of liberty” and heads one section of the book, “Trump’s policies and appointments pose an existential threat to humanity.” ... ... ... The book, rushed to the presses after the election, provides a brief history of the thinking that led the Framers to include impeachment, and the behavior that led presidents to get impeached — counting Richard Nixon along with Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton (the two presidents who didn’t resign before the Articles of Impeachment were read in the House), Lichtman points out that one out of every 14 presidents has been impeached: “gamblers have become rich betting on longer odds than that.” ... Eurovision strikes bum note - By David Stern - 4/13/17, 4:04 AM CET

This year’s song contest is threatened by disharmony.

" ... Eurovision just got serious ... The musical competition — known for its excessive bonhomie and costumes exploring the outer limits of good taste — is threatened by discord between this year’s host Ukraine and the contest’s governing body, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). ... Ukraine’s security services issued a travel ban last month to Yulia Samoylova, Russia’s entry. Samoylova performed in Crimea in 2015 — which the Kremlin has annexed from Ukraine — but didn’t apply for special permission from Kiev as Ukrainian law requires. ... Although Eurovision presents itself as an alternative to — if not a victory over — the Continent’s history of strife and division, politics have always lurked just below the surface. Many of these rifts become visible during the final voting process, which is partly conducted among the national populations: traditional linguistic, religious and political groupings vote for each other, while adversaries like Azerbaijan and Armenia steadfastly reject any opportunity to bury the hatchet. ... "

... BLOODY HELL ... WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO THE BRITISH ENTRIES IN THE FUTURE EUROVISION SONG CONTESTS - AFTER BULLSXIT ? ... Can The People in Wales remain in it ?

BULLSXIT is not going to change the fact that the non-political system called The United Kingdom is not interested in justice and its supporters have rigged the legal system so that even when somebody does challenge it successfully then The Demockerats can just refuse to accept the judiciary's rulings citing " Parliamentary Sovereignty " - or so other such nonsense -

Single parents with a child under two have won a court challenge as they face "real misery" from the government's benefits cap.

A High Court judge said the cap was not intended to cover such households, had "no good purpose", and the failure to exempt them was discriminatory.

The government said it intended to appeal and there would be no change to the cap while this process was ongoing.
The cap limits the income households receive in certain benefits.

That was a bit about " Henry VIII " clauses - but according to my mobile that is all the news that there is as yet on what is one of the most significant pieces of legislation since The Parliament Act over a hundred years ago. What the government is doing is - under the cloud of confusion created by The yammering Hierocrats in the media - using the proposed legislation to convert EU laws into UK laws to carve themselves out a new set of powers to arbitrarily change those laws without Parliamentary scrutiny let alone The Houses of Commons or Lords having any power to decide those laws. Perhaps now it will begin to occur to The Demockerats in Westminster that a Constitution is a better idea than crossing your fingers and whistling loudly in their self-imposed darkness devoid of coherent laws.

The government's bid to extract the UK from EU law in time for Brexit has passed its first parliamentary test.
MPs backed the EU Withdrawal Bill by 326 votes to 290 despite critics warning that it represented a "power grab" by ministers.
The bill, which will end the supremacy of EU law in the UK, now moves onto its next parliamentary stage.
Ministers sought to reassure MPs by considering calls for safeguards over their use of new powers.
Prime Minister Theresa May welcomed the Commons vote in the early hours of Tuesday morning, saying the bill offered "certainty and clarity" - but Labour described it as an "affront to parliamentary democracy". ...

Months of mountains of words which dissipate into nothingness ... most people are demanding the details of BREXIT but perhaps that is to be deceived by the dancing trees into missing the grain of the wood being hued ... I have just been reading an article in New Republic which has sent a chill through me : right wing activists backed by lots of money are openly campaigning to change The Constitution in The USA - and are having a hard time of it - in favour of wealthy minorities i.e. as I have predicted from The Four Estates Theory in Renaissance Republicanism what we may be facing circa 2050 is a counter-revolution from Democracy to Aristocracy across The World in which The State may become a client of international corporations and The People treated as the property of The State will be used to provide a captive source of steady risk-free profits. It may well be that the bigger picture - presently well out of focus - is that BREXIT is in fact not about The UK at all but about The EU : the objective may be to prevent the weaker European states from creating a state large enough to defend themselves from the international corporations and to deliver them into the hands of the wealthy elites of The Aristocracy - and The Hierarchy are instrumental in this.

We ought to be frightened of this in The UK : BREXIT is arguably the result of our having no coherent Constitution e.g. the chilling spectacle of the wealthy private individual Gina Miller defending what few constitutional arrangements we have - instead of The Supreme Court being able to actively intervene to defend Parliament from The Government ... In a proper Constitution BREXIT might not have happened because it might have specified the scope of what The EU Referendum could address instead of being allowed to be so vague that anybody - pro or con - could project anything onto the decision before them ... With no coherent Constitution what I am about to make notes about will result in The UK being the most vulnerable of all of The States in The World to being manipulated into being a tool for The Aristocrats against The Democrats with the result that the latter will be so much more likely to readily convert The UK into a strong government for the wealthy whilst simultaneously preaching that they are reducing the size of The State for the benefit of The People in Poverty to get rid of red tape etc to create jobs etc

Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right's Stealth Plan for America - Nancy MacLean

An explosive expose of the right's relentless campaign to eliminate unions, suppress voting, privatize public education, and change the Constitution.
Behind today's headlines of billionaires taking over our government is a secretive political establishment with long, deep, and troubling roots. The capitalist radical right has been working not simply to change who rules, but to fundamentally alter the rules of democratic governance. But billionaires did not launch this movement; a white intellectual in the embattled Jim Crow South did. Democracy in Chains names its true architect--the Nobel Prize-winning political economist James McGill Buchanan--and dissects the operation he and his colleagues designed over six decades to alter every branch of government to disempower the majority.

In a brilliant and engrossing narrative, Nancy MacLean shows how Buchanan forged his ideas about government in a last gasp attempt to preserve the white elite's power in the wake of Brown v. Board of Education. In response to the widening of American democracy, he developed a brilliant, if diabolical, plan to undermine the ability of the majority to use its numbers to level the playing field between the rich and powerful and the rest of us.

Corporate donors and their right-wing foundations were only too eager to support Buchanan's work in teaching others how to divide America into "makers" and "takers." And when a multibillionaire on a messianic mission to rewrite the social contract of the modern world, Charles Koch, discovered Buchanan, he created a vast, relentless, and multi-armed machine to carry out Buchanan's strategy.

Without Buchanan's ideas and Koch's money, the libertarian right would not have succeeded in its stealth takeover of the Republican Party as a delivery mechanism. Now, with Mike Pence as Vice President, the cause has a longtime loyalist in the White House, not to mention a phalanx of Republicans in the House, the Senate, a majority of state governments, and the courts, all carrying out the plan. That plan includes harsher laws to undermine unions, privatizing everything from schools to health care and Social Security, and keeping as many of us as possible from voting. Based on ten years of unique research, Democracy in Chains tells a chilling story of right-wing academics and big money run amok. This revelatory work of scholarship is also a call to arms to protect the achievements of twentieth-century American self-government.

"It's happening: the subversion of our democratic system from within. How did the political Right do it? Nancy MacLean tells the long-overlooked story of the political economist who developed the playbook for the Koch brothers. James McGill Buchanan merged states rights' thinking with free market principles and helped to fashion the inherently elitist ideology of today's Republican Party. Professor MacLean's meticulous research and shrewd insights make this a must-read for all who believe in government 'by the people.'"

--Nancy Isenberg, author of White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America

"This book is mesmerizing. Rarely have I encountered a work that speaks to such significant issues, with evidence rooted in conclusive new sources. In clear prose, MacLean reveals how a public once committed to social responsibility and egalitarian values became persuaded that only an unregulated free market could protect 'liberty' and 'choice.' Because of this, our once cherished democracy is now subject to attack. Everyone who wants to understand today's confrontational politics should read this important book, now."

--Alice Kessler-Harris, author of In Pursuit of Equity: Women, Men and the Quest for Economic Citizenship in Twentieth Century America

"How did we get to where we are today? How did corporations come to possess 'rights?' How did democracy come to be defined as selfish individualism? Or money as free speech? Nancy MacLean's Democracy in Chains provides the answers. It is essential reading in order to understand the ideas that billionaires use to justify their control of our political institutions. I can't imagine a more timely or urgent book."

--Greg Grandin, author of Fordlandia (finalist for the Pulitzer Prize) and The Empire of Necessity (winner of the Bancroft Prize)

Dark Money: how a secretive group of billionaires is trying to buy political control in the US - Jane Mayer

America is experiencing an age of profound economic inequality. Employee protections have been decimated, and state welfare is virtually non-existent, while hedge fund billionaires are grossly under-taxed and big businesses make astounding profits at the expense of the environment and of their workers.

How did this come about, and who were the driving forces behind it?

In this powerful and meticulously researched work of investigative journalism, New Yorker staff writer Jane Mayer exposes the network of billionaires trying to buy the US electoral system – and succeeding. Led by libertarian industrialists the Koch brothers, they believe that taxes are a form of tyranny and that government oversight of business is an assault on freedom. Together, they have spent hundreds of millions of dollars influencing politicians and voters, and hijacking American democracy for their own ends.

Dark Money brilliantly illuminates a shady corner of US politics. It is essential reading for anybody interested in the future of democracy.

‘Utterly brilliant and chilling – no matter how much you think you already know … Read it!’ (Naomi Klein author of This Changes Everything)

‘Political journalism at its best, an epic and terrifying story that grips the reader like a Stephen King thriller.’ (A.M. Homes The Observer)

‘Indispensable.’ (The Guardian)

‘Persuasive, timely and necessary.’ (The New York Times)

‘A terrifying insight into how 21st-century politics works.’ (George Monbiot The Guardian)

‘A chilling book’ (Times Higher Education)

‘A triumph … Mayer has cut through the secrecy that these men have carefully cultivated … and given the world a full accounting of what had been a shadowy and largely unseen force.’ (New York Review of Books)

Rules for Radicals : A right-wing economist’s plan to rig democracy for the rich.

BY ALAN WOLFE - September 12, 2017

We all know we live in a democracy. And we all know that in our democracy, inequality is rampant. So the question naturally arises: How do wealthy and powerful people protect their privileges against all those who have the right to vote and might—you never know—reject what the wealthy and powerful want ? ... ... Here is where the economist James McGill Buchanan made his major contribution to American political life. As MacLean tells us in Democracy in Chains, Buchanan, a Tennessean who spent most of his career in Virginia, came up with a way to prevent challenges to elite rule so innovative that it deserved a prize. As it happens, he got one: the Nobel Prize in economics in 1986. Buchanan is known for his contributions to what is called public choice theory, which applies economic reasoning to problems traditionally studied by political scientists. The key insight of public choice theory is that there is no such thing as a disinterested public bureaucracy that carries out neutral policies devoted to the common good. “Each participant in the political process,” Buchanan believed, “tries, single-mindedly, to further his own interest, at the expense of others if this is necessary.” Bureaucrats will inevitably try to expand the scope of what they regulate, just as businessmen will seek to expand their profits. Legislators find themselves at the mercy of government administrators because the administrators tend to have only one interest—protecting their turf—while elected representatives have many. ... ...

[ IN OTHER WORDS BUCHANAN'S ARGUMENT IS A LIBERAL ARGUMENT FOR ARISTOCRACY ]

... ... The importance of public choice theory, however, lies not in its technical terminology, but in its overall impact as a way of thinking about government. Over the past few decades, disdain toward government has become an established feature of the American political system. By building an influential base of support among academics for curbing the power of the government, Buchanan made a significant contribution to this change in the national mood. And since government has often acted, at least since the New Deal, to protect those with little power from those with more, public choice theory has helped along the process by which inequality in America has risen so dramatically in recent years. ... Not needing the state, libertarians never developed a theory of it. They simply aim to ensure that some take more advantage than others of the rules that govern a market-driven society. Buchanan, however, refused to view the state as a black box uninteresting in itself: He asked where the rules come from in the first place, and how they could be reshaped according to libertarian principles. ...

[ I AM NOT SURE HOW MUCH TO TAKE TO ILLUSTRATE THIS : GO READ THE ARTICLE ]

[ MACLEAN'S BOOK EMPHASISES THAT BUCHANAN'S WRITINGS DO NOT PRESENT ANY MEANS TO TEST HIS ECONOMIC THEORIES I.E. THERE IS NO POSSIBILITY ( IN MY TERMINOLOGY ) OF " OPERATIONALISATIONALISM " - OF CREATING MODELS WHICH YIELD NUMBERS WHICH CAN VALIDATE OR REFUTE THE CLAIMS MADE E.G. BY KARL MARX OR ADOLF HITLER IN THEIR TEXTS BECAUSE THEY ARE CLOSED SYSTEMS OF THOUGHT - FANTASIES THAT CAN NOT BE MADE REAL BUT WHICH ARE USED TO JUSTIFY THE USE OF VIOLENCE UPON OTHERS WHO ARE SUPPOSEDLY FRUSTRATING THE REALISATION OF THESE IDEALS ... SO WATCH OUT FOR THE BACKLASH UPON THE LAZY IDLE UNEMPLOYED ETC WHEN THE DEMOCRATS IN WESTMINSTER FAIL TO DELIVER ON THEIR FANTASTIC BREXIT PROMISES.]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_M._Buchanan

... Buchanan's work focused on public finance, the public debt, voting, rigorous analysis of the theory of logrolling, macroeconomics, constitutional economics, and libertarian theory ... The Badische Zeitung (Freiburg) called Buchanan, who showed how politicians undermine fair and simple tax systems, the "founder of the new political economy ... Buchanan was largely responsible for the rebirth of political economy as a scholarly pursuit. He emphasized that public policy cannot be considered solely in terms of distribution, but is instead always a matter of setting the rules of the game that engender a pattern of exchange and distribution. His work in public choice theory is often interpreted as the quintessential instance of economics imperialism; however, Amartya Sen has argued that Buchanan should not be identified with economics imperialism, since he has done more than most to introduce ethics, legal political thinking, and indeed social thinking into economics. Crucial to understanding Buchanan's system of thought is the distinction he made between politics and policy. Politics is about the rules of the game, where policy is focused on strategies that players adopt within a given set of rules. “Questions about what are good rules of the game are in the domain of social philosophy, whereas questions about the strategies that players will adopt given those rules is the domain of economics, and it is the play between the rules (social philosophy) and the strategies (economics) that constitutes what Buchanan refers to as constitutional political economy ... Buchanan's important contribution to constitutionalism is his development of the sub-discipline of constitutional economics ...

In 2017, Duke University historian Nancy MacLean published Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America, based on documents she found in Buchanan's archives. Her book claims that Buchanan saw a conflict between "economic freedom and political liberty", and that he sought (in his own words) "conspiratorial secrecy" in pursuit of what George Monbiot has described as "a hidden programme for suppressing democracy on behalf of the very rich" ... Conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg has criticized what he describes as "MacLean’s ideologically motivated shortcuts." Legal scholar Jonathan H. Adler alleges a pattern of misrepresentation in MacLean's book, including truncating quotes to present them as saying the opposite of their original context, drawing upon criticism from libertarian academics and thinkers such as Russ Roberts and David Boaz. Novelist Genevieve Valentine praised Democracy in Chains as taking the time to "meticulously trace" the links between Buchanan and David Koch and Charles Koch. Others have pointed out that Buchanan was a relatively marginal figure in the libertarian movement, of less influence compared to more popular theorists such as Milton Friedman, Ayn Rand, and Murray Rothbard. Writing in Vox, Steven Teles and Henry Farnell castigate left-wing readers and media outlets for embracing "such a transparently flawed book."

" Economics is the study of the whole system of exchange relationships. Politics is the study of the whole system of coercive or potentially coercive relationships."

[ WHEREAS I ARGUE THAT POLITICS IS ONLY COERCIVE WHEN THE STATE HAS BEEN SEIZED BY ULTRAISTS : THE STATE EXISTS TO COLLECTIVELY ADVISE AGAINST, PREVENT AND REMEDY NON-CONSENTING RELATIONSHIPS WHICH IS WHY THE PUBLIC DISCOURSE IS SO IMPORTANT AND INCLUDES ECONOMICS, SPIRITUALITY, RELIGION, POLITICS, SCIENCE AND CULTURE.]

" ... In 1996, nearly 70 percent of poor families received benefits. Today it’s less than 25 percent. And that’s not because they all found decent jobs and developed the sense of “personal responsibility” and “self-sufficiency” that Clinton loved to preach about. According to a study of low-income single mothers, more than 20 percent go for months at a time with neither employment nor benefits. Since 1995, the number of Americans living on $2 or less a day has nearly tripled—including some three million children. ... "

I have not written much so far on this thread because all we have heard so far are bland vague assertions playing either upon patriotism or xenophobia, optimism or pessimism, greed or anxiety - etc - but nothing much to discuss i.e. what I would describe as bad religion in that The Democrats are not debating the morality of BULLSXIT - and there has been no ethical debate at all so there has been no politics. Today Theresa May is due to make a key note speech in Florence and as is typical in The United Kingdom the provisions within it have been determined in secret whilst manufacturing a cloud of rumours for The Hierocrats to publish thus thoroughly confusing everybody and reducing The Public Discourse to nonsense. Whilst I was finally tackling last week's washing up this proem began to suggest itself as I listened to BBC Radio 4's A.M.

Hi Dai

I put a message here as you are likely to see it. In answer to your recent query, I have the same mobile number but the phone is often switched off. I've deserted Y Repwblic for a while as I am feeling rather exhausted, disheartened and have run out of zing. You can imagine why.

But I don't intend to take extreme measures. I'll resume posting when I am more myself again.

Dear Marianne,

that is exactly what I was worrying about : that you have had a very disheartening blow that is going to hurt a lot - I do not know if there is anything that I can say that can cheer you up ... Daf and I could come and visit but perhaps you need to get away ... Ring me if you are coming down to Cardiff ... I am losing a lot of sleep recently - for eighteen months - and my escape has been into lectures on Spinoza because they lift my spirit but also send me to sleep : perhaps Susan James or Rebecca Goldstein might also have the same result upon you ?
