Following the long but exciting discussions on forming the new Welsh Assembly Government, we have now learnt that the minister in charge of the dotCYM will be Ieuan Wyn Jones AM, Deputy First Minister and Minister for Economy and Transport. The bid has already been in discussion with the Deputy First Minister’s office and look forward to arranging a formal meeting in the near future.

dotCYM in Galicia
A delegation from dotCYM Cyf. will travel to a specially arranged conference in Galicia in September.

The conference has been called with the intention of creating a broad coalition of interest from other bids for linguistic and cultural top level domains like dotCYM. The conference is held in Santiago de Compostella, the capital of Galicia, which is a country within the Spanish state with its own Romance language. The country has a popular bid and is supported by the Xunta, the Galician government.

Among the other bids will be puntEUS from the Basque linguistic and cultural community, a community, like Catalan, which straddles both the Spanish and French states. This bid is also supported by the Basque regional government of Euskadi.

The conference is supported by CORE, the registrar company which is responsible for puntCAT and also will be responsible for dotCYM. The intention is to look at the possiblilities of strengthening each bid and finding any cost-savings which could be attained through cooperation.

Cylchlythyr 6 - Chwefror 2008

dotCYM yn Camu ’Mlaen gyda’r Llywodraeth

Wedi sawl mis o gysylltu llwyddwyd i gynnal cyfarfod buddiol a phositif iawn rhwng dotCYM Cyf. a swyddogion prysur Llywodraeth y Cynulliad ar 20 Chwefror.

Cadarnhaodd swyddogion y Llywodraeth fod Llywodraeth y Cynulliad yn gefnogol i gais dotCYM mewn egwyddor ac am ei gefnogi’n wleidyddol ac yn ariannol. Bydd angen i ni a’r Llywodraeth nawr drafod yn union hyd a lled y gefnogaeth honno, ond yn sicr mae’r gefnogaeth yma’n holl bwysig ac yn newyddion da iawn.

Mae dotCYM a’r Llywodraeth yn barod i greu hunaniaeth gref i’r Gymraeg a Chymreictod ar y rhyngrwyd.

dotCYM yn Rhedeg i Baris

Fe fydd cynhadledd nesaf ICANN, y corff sy’n llywodraethu enwau parth ar y we, ym Mharis rhwng 22 - 29 Mehefin.

Disgwyliwn y bydd ICANN yn cyhoeddi agor ceisiadau ar gyfer Parthau Lefel Uchaf (Top Level Domains - fel .cym neu .gal) yn y gynhadledd hon. Bydd angen i dotCYM Cyf, cefnogwyr y cais a’r Llywodraeth felly fod yn barod iawn ar gyfer y dyddiad yma ac yna cyflwyno’r cais terfynol ym mis Hydref eleni.

Ond gofal - does dim yn sicr yn hyn ac mae ICANN wedi gohirio’r cyhoeddiad holl bwysig yma sawl gwaith dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf. Bydd rhaid i ni fod yn barod felly a chroesi’n bysedd y bydd ICANN yn mynd â’r maen i’r wal yr haf yma.

Hillary’n cefnogi dotNYC

Os ydych chi’n dilyn rhagetholiadau am arweinyddiaeth y Democratiaid yn yr UDA fe fyddwch yn gyfarwydd ag enw Hillary Clinton. Ond faint ohonoch oedd yn gwybod fod Hillary yn cefnogi cais dotNYC ar gyfer Parth Level Uchaf i ddinas Efrog Newydd (New York City)?

Fe gafodd dotBERLIN, cais ar ran prifddinas Yr Almaen hefyd gefnogaeth fwyafrif o 82% o’r Bundestag (Senedd Yr Almaen) yn ddiweddar. Mae’r ddwy gais hon yn cydweithio’n agos gyda chais dotCYM a cheisiadau parthau ieithoedd a diwylliant eraill fel pointBZH (Llydawyr) a puntoGAL (Galisiaid).

Sticeri i America

Newyddion da o gefnogaeth gan ein brodyr a chwiorydd yn America. Danfonwyd sawl pecyn yn ddiweddar o’n gludion car enwog. Aeth swpyn o 50 i Dave Parry gynt o Aberystwyth ond sydd nawr y pen-bandit gyda’r Chicago Tafia Welsh Society. Os fyddwch chi yn y Ddinas Wyntog cofiwch brynu sticer ganddo! Ewch i’w gwefan am ragor o wybodaeth: http://www.geocities.com/thechicagotafia/

I brynu sticer car eich hun ewch yma: nawr ar werth am £1 nid £2!

Newsletter #6 - Feburary 2008

dotCYM and WAG

After several months of negotiating dotCYM Cyf. finally managed to meet with the Welsh Assembly Government on February the 20th for a very positive and worth-while meeting.

The WAG officials confirmed that the Government supports dotCYM in principle and will support the bid politically and financially. The dotCYM team will now have to discuss with the Government the exact size and nature of that support in detail but there’s no doubting that this is very good news for the success of the bid. It’s proof that dotCYM and the Welsh Assembly Government are ready to invest in creating a strong identity for Welsh and Welshness on the internet.

dotCYM in Paris

ICANN, the body responsible for the assignment of domain names on the internet, will have their next conference in Paris from 22 - 29 June.

We expect ICANN to open their doors to bids for new Top Level Domains at this conference (bids like that for .cym). The dotCYM bid, our supporters and the Government will therefore need to be ready to hit the ground running at this date as the final bid may need to be submitted in October this year.

But there is a health warning on this message. ICANN have postponed several expected dates for the opening of nominations over the last year or so and it could happen again. dotCYM and our fellow bids will need to cross our fingers and hope that 2008 will be the year to put our culture on the internet map!

Hillary Supports dotNYC

If you’re one of the millions who have been following the elections for the leadership of the Democratic party in the USA you’ll be very familiar with Hillary Clinton’s name. But did you know that she’s pledged her support of the dotNYC (New York City) bid too?

Likewise the dotBERLIN from the German capital city has also received an 82% majority of votes at the German Bundestag (Parliament) recently. These two bids are cooperating with us and our fellow linguistic and cultural community bids from pointBZH (Bretons) and puntoGAL (Galicians).

Stickers to America

Good news from our fellow Welshmen and women in the USA. We’ve recently sent several packages of our famous dotCYM car stickers to the States but the biggest batch was sent to Chicago. Dave Parry, originally of Aberystwyth, but now of the Chicago Tafia Welsh Society ordered a pack of 50 stickers - so, if you’re in the Windy City, remember to grab one off him! Go to their website for more information: http://www.geocities.com/thechicagotafia/

To see the dotCYM car stickers visit this page: Price now £1 not £2!

Cylchlythyr 7 - Ebrill 2008

Gelligaer, Bragwyr a Winsconsin
Mae llythyron ac e-bost o gefnogaeth i dotCYM Cyf. yn dal i’n cyrraedd. Ac mae amrywiaeth eang ymhlith ein cefnogwyr diweddaraf.

Mae Cyngor Cymuned Gelligaer yn ymuno â’r rhestr hir o gynghorau Cymreig sy’n cefnogi’r cais. Mae’n dda gweld fod aelodau eraill o sector fusnes Cymru’n gweld yr angen am frand Cymreig - a dyna un o’r rhesymau i’r Breconshire Brewery a’r Association of Welsh Independent Brewers gefnogi’r cais. A da o beth gweld fod mwy fyth o gymdeithasau Cymreig tramor yn cefnogi’r alwad - y Cambrian Heritage Society of Madison yn Wisconsin, Great Plains Welsh Heritage Project, Nebraska a’r Welsh Society of Greater Cincinnati yn Ohio yw’r ddiweddaraf. Nôl yng Nghymru, mae Capel Presbyteraidd Ebeneser, Casnewydd hefyd wedi dangos eu cefnogaeth.

Diolch am eu cefnogaeth (a’r cannoedd o gefnogwyr eraill). Mae’n arwydd da iawn o gefnogaeth ar lawr gwlad i gais dotCYM.

Rhedeg i Baris
Bydd dotCYM yn mynychu cynhadledd bwysig ICANN (corff llywodraethol y rhyngrwyd) ym Mharis ar 22 Mehefin. Wedi hir aros, disgwylir mai hon fydd y gynhadledd fydd yn cyhoeddi’r alwad am geisiadau newydd ar gyfer Parthau Lefel Uchaf newydd.

Bydd aelodau tîm dotCYM yn lobio’r sefydliad ac yn hyrwyddo’r cais ar ran y Gymuned Gymraeg a Chymreig. Os caiff y ffenest ei hagor ym mis Mehefin fe fydd y cais yn torchi eu llewys mewn cydweithrediad â Llywodraeth y Cynulliad i sicrhau na fydd y Cymry’n colli’ trên pwysig hon!

Croeso Mererid
Rydym yn falch i gyhoeddi fod Mererid Jones, yn wreiddiol o’r Bala, a bellach yn Gyfarwyddwr Cyllid Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin, wedi cytuno i ymuno â thîm dotCYM Cyf. fel ein Hymgynghorydd Ariannol.

Roedd Mererid eisoes wedi arwyddo’r ddeiseb i gefnogi’r cais fisoedd yn ôl ac mae hi’n edrych ymlaen at weithio ar y cais. Mae Mererid yn gyfrifydd siartredig ICAEW a bydd ei harbenigedd ariannol yn holl bwysig i gadarnhau seiliau ariannol solet dotCYM Cyf.

dotCYM a WAG
Yn dilyn trafodaethau rhwng dotCYM a Llywodraeth y Cynulliad rydym ar fin cyflwyno fersiwn ddiwygiedig o’i Chynllun Busnes i'r Llywodraeth. Mae hyn yn dilyn cadarnhad o dan bennawd 194 yn nogfen Cymru’r Un fod y Llywodraeth yn cefnogi cais dotCYM. Bydd y cynllun busnes yn rhan o’r broses drafod rhwng y cais a’r Llywodraeth i sicrhau cefnogaeth ariannol a gwleidyddol.

Rydym yn hyderus iawn yn ein cynllun ac mae’n dangos fod ein rhagolygon ar gyfer defnydd a gwerthiant parthau .cym yn realistig ac yn ariannol synhwyrol.

Edrychwn ymlaen at barhau’r drafodaeth (a gweithredu) gyda’r Llywodraeth.

dotSCO ar y Blaen?
Da oedd gweld fod yr Albanwyr wedi derbyn cefnogaeth Prif Weinidog yr Alban, Alex Salmond, i gais dotSCO. Edrychwn ymlaen at weld dotSCO a dotCYM ar werth ac yn cael eu defnyddio yn 2009.

Newsletter # 7 - April 2008
Gelligaer, Brewers and Wisconsin
Support for dotCYM is still arriving from all over Wales and beyond. Some of the latest names just go to show how broad the support is for the bid.

Gelligaer Community Council joins the long list of local authorities in Wales who support dotCYM. It’s good to see that many businesses see the benefit of having the .cym choice to brand their products – one of the latest supporters is the Breconshire Brewery and also the Association of Welsh Independent Brewers.

Even more societies in the Welsh Diaspora are signing up. Among the latest from the USA are: the Cambrian Heritage Society of Madison in Wisconsin, Great Plains Welsh Heritage Project in Nebraska and the Welsh Society of Greater Cincinnati, Ohio. Back home in Wales, Ebeneser Welsh Presbyterian Chapel in Newport, Gwent has just shown their support for dotCYM’s bid.

We’d like to thank them all for their support (and to the hundreds of other societies, clubs and businesses). It’s another good sign that .cym is a popular domain with support across the spectrum of Welsh society.

Sprintime in Paris
OK, more like, summer time in Paris, but the dotCYM team will be in the capital of France from 22 - 26 June to attend ICANN (the Internet’s governing body’s) Conference. This is the conference where we expect (and hope) to see the announcement of the opening for the next tranche of applications for new top-level domains.

Members of the dotCYM Cyf. team will be lobbying and canvassing support as well as discussing business with various registrars and other IT-related companies and corporations. If the window for the next tranche is opened in Paris then, with the support of the Welsh Assembly Government, dotCYM Cyf. will be ready to submit a winning bid with the expectation that .cym could be on sale to the public in the summer of 2009.

Welcome to Mererid
dotCYM are glad to announce that Mererid Jones, who’s originally from Bala and is now Finance Director at Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin (Welsh-medium nursery network) has joined the dotCYM team. She is our new Financial Advisor.

Mererid is a long-time supporter of dotCYM and had actually signed the online petition months ago. She is an ICAEW chartered accountant and her financial expertise will be instrumental in securing dotCYM’s solid financial basis.

dotCYM and WAG
Following discussions between dotCYM and the Welsh Assembly Government the bid is about to submit its business plan in the first week of May. This follows the confirmation of WAG support for dotCYM in the Government’s One Wales Delivery Plan listed under heading 194. The business case will be part of the on-going discussion to outline the Government’s financial and political support.

The dotCYM team are very confident in the business plan which shows that the support and sales of .cym domains is realistic and financially viable.

dotCYM look forward to continuing our discussion and implementing the One Wales document’s promise.

dotSCO ahead of dotCYM?

It was good to see the dotSCO bid in Scotland receiving the unequivocal support by the country’s First Minister, Alex Salmond. We look forward to seeing both domains for sale in the very near future.

Cylchlythyr 8 - Gorffennaf 2008
Paris yn yr Haf
Daw'r cylchlythyr yma atoch ychydig yn hwyr gan i dotCYM fynychu cynhadledd bwysig ICANN ym Mharis er mwyn hyrwyddo’r achos Cymreig.

Roedd y gynhadledd honno’n bleidiol i’r cais gan iddi gadarnhau nad oedd gwrthwynebiad sylweddol i’r syniad o .cym. Mae’n amlwg fod nifer o’r gwybodusion wedi sylweddoli, yn sgil llwyddiant puntCAT, fod parthau ieithyddol a diwylliannol yn llawer llai o drafferth na nifer o rhai masnachol.

Unig siom y gynhadledd oedd i ICANN, unwaith eto, ohirio agor y drws i geisiadau am barthau (domains) newydd - er mawr siom i fwyafrif helaeth y mynychwyr. Mae’n amlwg i dotCYM fod cael y drwydded i weithredu parth .cym o fewn ein gafael os aiff cais fewn o Gymru. Mae .cym o fewn ein gafael - y perygl fwyaf ar hyn o’r bryd i wireddu .cym yw bod Cymru’n methu â chyflwyno’r cais!

dotCYM Cyf. – wyt ti am ymaelodi?
Bydd dotCYM Cyf. yn cychwyn proses o ddenu aelodau i’r cwmni yn yr haf. Ein bwriad yw denu cyn-gymaint o aelodau'r gymuned Gymraeg a Chymreig a phosib. Tâl aelodaeth fydd £25 ar gyfer unigolyn neu £100 i gwmni neu fudiad. Dyma fydd ein cyfle i ddangos i’r byd fod .cym yn fynegiant llawr gwlad o ddyhead y gymuned Gymreig. Beth am fod yn rhan o’r symudiad cynhyrfus hwn a chwarae eich rhan yn hyrwyddo’r Gymraeg a Chymreictod ar y we? Caiff manylion eu datgelu yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yng Nghaerdydd eleni.

Esboniadau
Bu’r rhyngrwyd, ICANN a pharthau newydd ar y rhyngrwyd ar y newyddion Prydeinig yn sgil cynhadledd ICANN. Yn anffodus rhoddodd nifer o’r adroddiadau gamargraff o’r hyn sy’n digwydd. Felly, yn sgil rhai sylwadau mae aelodau dotCYM wedi eu derbyn yn ddiweddar, dyma esbonio rhai pethau.

.cym - hawdd? Mae’n syndod cymaint o bobl sy’n credu mai mater hawdd fydd ennill .cym. Yn anffodus, nid felly fydd hi. Er bod ICANN yn cyhoeddi eu bod nhw’n agored i bob math o wahanol barthau, dydy hynny ddim yn golygu y byddant yn derbyn pob cais o bell ffordd. Disgwylir y bydd hyd at hanner neu fwy o’r ceisiadau’n cael eu gwrthod. Er bod yr arolygon yn dda i .cym does dim yn sicr a ’dyw hi bendant ddim yn hawdd!

.cym - syml? Erm, na, yn anffodus. Mae ceisio am drwydded i gael .cym fel ceisio am drwydded i ddarlledu gorsaf radio neu deledu. Mae’n rhaid dangos fod galw a bod y gallu gennych i’w redeg yn ariannol. Mae’n rhaid mynd drwy broses gyfreithiol gymhleth a thalu amdano cyn ennill y drwydded. Mae’r un peth yn wir am gais dotCYM. Nid mater o gyflwyno deiseb neu ddanfon llythyr yw ennill .cym - mae’n job fawr. Dyna pam y credwn, fel mynegiant democrataidd y gymuned Gymreig, mai Llywodraeth y Cynulliad ddylai ysgwyddo’r baich. Wedi’r cyfan, bydd .cym yno er lles y gymuned nid er lles unigolion.

Pryd gawn ni .cym?
Does dim yn sicr – mae ICANN wedi gohirio agor y drysau i geisiadau newydd o leiaf tair gwaith bellach, ond wedi arwydd cadarnhaol ym Mharis, credir bellach y bydd ICANN yn gofyn am gais o ddiddordeb yn chwarter cyntaf 2009 – yng Nghynhadledd ICANN ym Mecsico mwy na thebyg.

Mae hyn yn rhoi mwy o amser i ICANN roi trefn ar ei phrosesau, sydd yn ymateb yn fwy i her y galw i wahanol sgriptiau gwyddorau (e.e. Cyrileg, Tsieinëeg, Arabeg ayyb yn cael eu cydnabod a’u derbyn) a sut mae delio gyda sawl cais am yr un parth. Mae hefyd yn rhoi ychydig fwy o amser i dotCYM Cyf. baratoi ein cais. Ein bwriad yw y byddwn yn cyflwyno’r cais am .cym ar y cyfle cynharaf a hynny gyda’n partneriaid o Lydaw, Galisia, Gwlad y Basg a’r Alban. Cyhoeddodd ICANN hefyd y byddant yn ystyried ceisiadau o’r un fath (fel yr un ieithyddol a diwylliannol) gyda'i gilydd. Credwn y bydd hyn o fantais i .cym.

Am ragor o wybodaeth am amserlen, gofynion a’r her sy’n wynebu’r cais, darllenwch ddogfen Tom Brooks ar ein gwefan.

dotCYM Cyf. yn Siarad Siop
Wedi’r ymateb positif ym Mharis penderfynodd dotCYM fynd ati i drafod gyda nifer o gwmnïau gweinyddu cofrestr (registry operators - y rhai sy’n sicrhau fod .cym ar y rhyngrwyd ac yn gweithio) a chwmnïau cofrestri (registrars - y rhai fydd yn gwerthu .cym).

.EUS ar y Ffordd
Da oedd gweld ym Mharis fod y Basgiaid am roi cais fewn i ennill trwydded i .eus (Euskara yw enw’r iaith Fasgeg mewn Basgeg). Mae gan .eus gefnogaeth Llywodraeth Euskadi.

Er bod gan lywodraeth Euskadi fwy o bwerau na’n Cynulliad ni (a Senedd Yr Alban hyd yn oed) mae’r boblogaeth ychydig yn llai na Chymru. Mae Gwlad y Basg wedi ei rhannu yn saith talaith hanesyddol; Euskadi sy’n cynnwys tair o’r taleithiau hynny (gan gynnwys dinasoedd Bilbao a San Sebastian, Donostia yn Basgeg); Nafar (Navarre neu Nafarroa yn Basgeg) sydd i’r de gyda dinas Pamplona (Iruna) lle cynhelir ras deirw enwog San Fermin; a thair talaith Iparralde (y Gogledd) sy’n rhan o wladwriaeth Ffrainc. Bydd .eus felly yn ffordd o uno’r Basgwyr sydd ar hyn o’r bryd wedi eu rhannu gan ddwy wladwriaeth a thri ‘rhanbarth’.

Mae un peth yn sicr, unwaith bydd y Basgiaid yn penderfynu ar rywbeth fyddant yn mynd â’r maen i’r wal. Dyma’r bobl adeiladodd Amgueddfa enwog Guggenheim yn Bilbao ac sydd wedi sefydlu papur dyddiol mewn Basgeg! Ewch draw i fwynhau gwefan amlieithog www.euskadi.net - gwers arall i ni yng Nghymru.

Cefnogwyr Diweddaraf
Ymysg cefnogwyr diweddaraf .cym mae dau o’n prif sefydliadau; y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol ac ymgyrch Cadwch Gymru’n Daclus.

Cyflogir 300 o staff gan Lyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru yn Aberystwyth. Maent ar flaen y gad wrth ddigido archifau, lluniau, ffotograffau ... ac archifo gwefannau! Maent yn gweld .cym fel teclyn defnyddiol i frandio gwaith y Llyfrgell a Chymru a hefyd fel ffordd o’i wneud yn haws i bobl sy’n pori ar y we i ddod o hyd i wefannau sydd o ddiddordeb Cymreig. Bydd .cym hefyd yn ei gwneud yn haws i archifo deunydd Cymreig ar y we!

Mae ymgyrch Cadwch Gymru’n Daclus yn chwarae rhan flaenllaw wrth gadw’n gwlad brydferth yn ... brydferth! Mae ganddynt rwydwaith eang o gannoedd o wirfoddolwyr ac maent yn gweithio’n agos iawn gyda’r Llywodraeth i ddatblygu a gweithredu polisïau sy’n garedig i’r amgylchedd.

Newsletter #8 - July 2008
Paris in Summer Time
Our regular bimonthly newsletter arrives a little late this time as we’ve been busy flying the Red Dragon at ICANN’s Paris conference.

The conference was a success for the bid as it confirmed that there is no substantial opposition (if any) to the concept of .cym. The important decision makers at ICANN seem also to have realised, due to the success of puntCAT, that linguistic and cultural domains like dotCYM are in many respects much less hassle than many more solely commercially motivated bids.

The only dissappointment was that ICANN, one again, postponed opening the door to new applications – much to the dissappointment of the mojority of conference goers! It’s obvious to dotCYM that winning the license to run the .cym domain is withing our grasp and the biggest challenge will be to submit the bid from Wales.

dotCYM – will you join?
dotCYM are about the begin on a process of attracting new members. Our intention is to open membership to individuals for £25 and for companies and societies for £100. This is part of our aim to make the bid as respresentative of Welsh life as possible and give as many people as possible a stake in the domain. Why not pay up and join – it’s your chance to make history and make sure Wales joins the 21st century. More details will be available at the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff in August.

Explainations!
ICANN, domains, the internet were all on the news in June due to the ICANN Conference in Paris. Unfortunately, several media reports gave a false picture of many of the issues involved and the ICANN process. So, due to many comments and questions dotCYM directors have received over the past few weeks, here’s a quick explaination!

.cym – easy? It’s incredible how many people seem to be under the illusion that wining .cym is an easy proceedure – an illusion reinforced by the reports from ICANN Paris. Oh, were it true! Although ICANN have been reported as saying that they are open to any new bid that doesn’t by a long way mean that every bid will be accepted. It’s believed that up to a half, or more even, will be rejected. So, although the outlook is favourable for .cym it’s by no means a certain bet. Like all bids we need to make sure our technical, financial, political and personel side of the bid is water tight … and we are!

.cym – simple? Erm, no, unfortunately. Applying for the licenense to have a .cym domain is a little like applying for a licence to run a new radio or tv station. You need to show there is a demand for the station and that you have the financial and legal know-how to run it. The same is true of the licence to win .cym. It’s not a simple matter of submitting a dog-eared petition to ICANN. There is also the not insubstantial cost of the ICANN fee for submissions … a fee ICANN has yet to decide on!

When will we get .cym?
Nobody knows for certainty. ICANN have postponed the process at least three times over the past two years but Paris did offer a more concrete roadmap. It now seems likely that ICANN will ask for applications of intent in the first quarter of 2009, most likely in their Conference at Mexico.

This will give ICANN time to put its proceedures in order and sort out how to react to the increase call for use of different scripts on the web (alphabets in Cyrilic, Arabic alphabets, Chinese characters etc.) and also how to deal with more than one bid for the same domain. It also gives dotCYM more time to put its final bid together. Our intention is to present our bid at the earliest possible time … after all the delays with this much-expect application process we aren’t about to let it to chance and delay. We’ll present our bid most likely with our sister bids from Britanny, Galicia the Basque Country and Scotland. ICANN also announced at Paris that they will adjudicate on bids in batches, with similar bids bundeled together. We believe this process will be to .cym’s benefit.

For more information about the bid, the timescale and the context, please read Tom Brooks’s document.

dotCYM Talking Shop
Due to the positive response at Paris, dotCYM are continuing the discussions about the mechanics of runing the .cym domain with various companies. These include discussing with registry operators – the company which will make sure .cym is actually available and safe, and registrars – the companies which will sell .cym to the public.

.EUS on the Way
It was good to see that the Basque bid were in Paris for the conference. The Basque domain will be .eus (Euskara being the Basque name for the Basque language). The puntEUS bid has the full support of the coalition government of Euskadi.

Although the Euskadi parliament has more powers than our Assembly (and even the Scottish parliament) its population is a little less than Wales. The Basque Country is divided into seven historic provinces: Euskadi is the largest in population and includes three provinces which include the cities of Bilbao and San Sebastian; Navarre (Nafarroa in Basque) lies to the south and includes the city of Pamplona which is famous for the San Fermin ‘bull run’ and three other Basque provinces are located in France. The .eus bid therefore will be a way of uniting the Basque Country which is divided by two states and in three administrative regions.

One thing’s for sure, once the Basques decide on something, they’ll get it done! These are the people who commissioned and built the ground-breaking Guggenheim museum and the stylish Bilbao metro. They’ve got the ambition and determination to make sure .eus is presented to ICANN … lets make sure we show the same ‘can-do’ attitude!

For more information about Euskadi, visit their multilingual website www.euskadi.net - something else we can learn from the Basques!

Latest Supporters
Among two of the latest large bodies to support the dotCYM bid are The National Library of Wales and Keep Wales Tidy.

The National Library employs three hundred members people and is at the forefront of digitising Welsh archives, picture, photographs … and websites to go online. They see .cym as a useful way to brand the Library and Wales and also an invaluable way to make finding Welsh-interest sites on the web and then archive them.

The Keep Wales Tidy campaign is one of Wales’s most imporatant voluntary organisations which does so much to keep our beautiful country … well, beautiful. There are also one of the main protagonists for more environmentally-aware policies and work closesly with the Government.

Cylchlythyr dotCYM 9 - Medi 2008
Cyfarwyddwyr Newydd ar gyfer dotCYM
Mewn cyfarfod ar ddydd Sul y 3ydd o Awst, cafwyd Tom Brooks a Sharanne Basham-Pyke eu derbyn fel Cyfarwyddwyr dotCYM cyf.

Mae Tom wedi gweithio ym maes Technoleg Gwybodaeth am dros ddeugain mlynedd, ac fel ymgynghorydd rheoli mae wedi arwain prosiectau mawr yn y sector gyhoeddus a’r sector breifat. Mae hefyd yn aelod lleyg trwy wahoddiad o Bwyllgor TG Trawsbleidiol San Steffan ac yn gyfrannwr lleyg i’r Grŵp Cyfathrebu Trawsbleidiol.

Mae Sharanne Basham-Pyke yn Gyfarwyddwr Cleientiaid gyda BT. Yn ystod ei gyrfa yn y diwydiant technoleg gwybodaeth a chyfathrebu mae hi wedi canolbwyntio’n bennaf ar ddatblygu a dylanwadu ar wasanaethau ar gyfer Cymru. Mae hi hefyd yn aelod o Bwyllgor Ymgynghorol Rhyngwladol Ysgol Fusnes Caerdydd, yn aelod bwrdd o Gymdeithas Tai, ac yn aelod o RhAG Casnewydd.

Bydd y ddau yn gaffaeliaid mawr i ymgais dotCYM.

e-Drosedd a .cym
Bydd y parth .cym yn gymorth yn y frwydr yn erbyn e-Drosedd – dyna’r neges rydym yn clywed gan sawl arbenigwr yn y maes.

Mae oddeutu 2 biliwn o bobl yn defnyddio’r Rhyngrwyd heddiw. Erbyn 2012, disgwylir y bydd wedi cynyddu i tua 7 biliwn. Mae’r cynnydd ar ran defnyddwyr (ac felly gwefannau hefyd) yn un rheswm da, ymysg llawer, am barthau newydd – ac mae hynny’n rhan o benderfyniad ICANN i agor y drysau ar gyfer parthau newydd. O fewn y cyd-destun yma, mae’n gwneud synnwyr i gael parth ar gyfer y gymuned Gymreig. Ond mae rheswm da arall yn dod yn amlwg.

Oherwydd bydd y parth .cym yn barth noddedig (yn wahanol i .com), bydd rheolaeth dynnach ar ran pwy gall ei phrynu. Golyga hyn gall bobl teimlo’n fwy diogel gyda .cym. Os bydd .cym ar ddiwedd cyfeiriad, cewch fod yn fwy sicr nad yw’n e-bost sbam neu’n gynnig ffug. Rheswm da arall dros .cym!

Lansiad Eisteddfod gyda’r Dirprwy Brif Weinidog
Datganodd Ieuan Wyn Jones AC, Gweinidog dros yr Economi a Thrafnidiaeth a Dirprwy Brif Weinidog Cymru, gefnogaeth wleidyddol ac ariannol y Llywodraeth i ymgais dotCYM yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol eleni. Cafwyd croeso cynnes i’r datganiad, a derbyniodd sylw eang yn y cyfryngau. Mae cefnogaeth Llywodraeth y Cynulliad i ymgais dotCYM yn debyg i gefnogaeth mewn gwledydd fel Catalwnia a Galisia ar gyfer eu ceisiadau hwythau.

dotCYM, UNESCO a WAG ym Mangor
Cyflwynodd Tom Brooks papur ar ran dotCYM fel rhan o gynhadledd ryngwladol ar ‘Gyd-ddealltwriaeth Fyd-eang mewn Cyd-destunau Amlieithog, Amlfodd ac Amlgyfrwng’ ym Mangor ar Awst 22ain. Noddwyd y gynhadledd gan Lywodraeth y Cynulliad fel rhan o’i gyfraniad i ‘2008: Blwyddyn Ryngwladol Ieithoedd y Byd’. Arweiniwyd y gynhadledd gan UNESCO ac agorwyd gan Alun Ffred Jones ar ran Llywodraeth y Cynulliad.

Teitl papur Tom roedd ‘The dotCYM Experience - The Challenges of Establishing a Minority Language on the Internet’. Rhoddwyd croeso cynnes i’r papur, a dangoswyd llawer o ddiddordeb yn y pwnc. Cynhelir cynhadledd y flwyddyn nesaf yn Amsterdam.

Swyddog dotCYM
Mae cefnogaeth Llywodraeth y Cynulliad wedi galluogi dotCYM cyf. i benodi Aran Jones i weithio ar y cais am oddeutu tri mis.

Mae Aran yn adnabyddus o fewn y We Gymraeg am gychwyn y peiriant casglu blogiau www.blogiadur.com a’r fersiwn Saesneg www.blogcymru.com. Mae hefyd yn rhan o dîm www.pishyn.com, yn helpu rhedeg www.dimegoch.com (ymgyrch i gefnogi busnesau Cymraeg) ac yn hostio’r wefan drafod llwyddiannus www.maes-e.com. Bydd sgiliau trefnu Aran a’i frwdfrydedd dros y We Gymraeg yn gymorth mawr wrth iddo fynd ati ar ran dotCYM cyf.

dotCYM Newsletter #9 - September 2008
New Directors
Tom Brooks and Sharanne Basham-Pyke were made new Directors of dotCYM cyf. at a meeting on Sunday 3 August.

Tom has some forty years of experience in the IT world and is a management consultant who has guided major public and private sector outsourcing initiatives. He has been a Divisional Director of a European subsidiary of one of the USA’s largest technology company and a Director of two UK companies. He is an invited lay member of the Westminster All Party Parliamentary IT Committee and a lay participant in the All Party Communications Group.

Sharanne Basham-Pyke is a Client Director for BT. During her career in the ICT industry she has been primarily focused on influencing and delivering services to Wales. She is also a member of Cardiff Business School International Advisory Board, Board Member of a Housing Association in Wales, and a member of RhAG Casnewydd (Parents for Welsh-medium education, Newport Gwent).

Both Sharanne and Tom will be great assets to the dotCYM bid.

e-Crime and .cym
The .cym domain will be a help in the fight against e-Crime. That’s the message we’re hearing from many experts in the field.

There are currently some 2 billion internet users in the world. That figure’s expected to rise to 7 billion users by 2012. The increase in users and, by implication, websites is one good reason, among many, for new domains – which is one reason ICANN are going ahead to open the process for domains. Within this context, it makes sense to have a domain for the Welsh community. But another good reason is coming apparent.

As the .cym domain will be a sponsored domain (unlike .com for instance) there will be tighter management over who can use it. This means the .cym domain will be a domain people can feel safer with. So, in the future, if there’s a .cym at the end of the URL you can be surer that it’s not a spam email or fake proposition. Another good reason for .cym

Eisteddfod Launch with Minister
Ieuan Wyn Jones AM, Economy and Transport Minsiter and also Deputy First Minister announced the Government’s political and financial support for the dotCYM bid at this year’s National Eisteddfod. The annoucement was well received and given wide coverage in the press and media.

The Welsh Assembly Government’s support for dotCYM is in line with similar support in other countries such as Catalonia and Galicia for their respective bids.

dotCYM, UNESCO and WAG at Bangor
The dotCYM Board Member, Tom Brooks, gave a paper as part of the international conference on ‘Global Understanding in Multilingual, Multimodal and Multimedia contexts’ in Bangor on 22 August. The conference was sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government as part of its contribution to ‘2008 as the International Year for Language’. The conference was led by UNESCO and was opened by Alun Ffred Jones as the WAG Minister.

Tom’s subject was ‘The dotCYM Experience - The Challenges Of Establishing A Minority Language On The Internet’. The paper was well received and generated a lot of interest. Next year’s international conference will take place in Amsterdam.

dotCYM Man
The support of the Welsh Assembly Government has allowed dotCYM cyf. to appoint Aran Jones to work on the bid for the next three months or so.

Aran is well-known to many in the Welsh internet scene and is the man behind the Welsh language blog aggregator, www.blogiadur.com and also the English language www.blogcymru.com . He is also part of the Welsh language dating website team at www.pishyn.com, started www.dimegoch.com (an online campaign to support the use of Welsh in business) and is responsible for hosting the popular Welsh discussion forum www.maes-e.com. Aran’s organisational skills and passion for the Welsh internet culture will be great assets as he gets to work for dotCYM cyf.

February 2009 Newsletter 2009 the year for dotCYM? Were sorry that we havent sent out a newsletter recently but as youllsee from this edition, weve been rather busy! And there is plenty ofgenuinely encouraging news for supporters of dotCYM as we head into 2009 the crunch year for applications to ICANN. Thank you, as ever, for yoursupport and we hope that it will not be too much longer before you canstart making plans to buy your own .cym domain. dotCYM meeting with the Deputy First Minister After working closely with Assembly officers over the last few months torefine the business plan, we are now looking forward to meeting the DeputyFirst Minister early in March. We will be continuing to work closely withAssembly officers between now and then to make sure that any remainingquestions are answered fully in advance of the meeting, and we areoptimistic that the meeting will make the future of the bid absolutelyclear. A considerable amount of work has gone into developing the businessplan in line with Assembly requirements, and dotCYM are very grateful toall our Board members for their extremely valuable input. dotCYM respond to ICANN draft request proposal dotCYM have responded formally to ICANNs draft request proposal, in whichthey outlined their expected requirements for bids for new domains. Wenoted several key points which may require further clarification fromICANN, in particular with regards to data protection legislation, and havealso requested that they look again at proposals for flat fee structuresinstead of percentage-based fees. After receiving a number of similarconcerns during the consultation period, ICANN are now intending to producea second draft of the request proposal, which means further slippage in theexpected dates for actual bid submission. However, we are still expectingto be engaged in the actual submission process by this summer at latest. We would like to thank Peter Black AM, Bethan Jenkins AM and Jill Evans MEPfod their support and for raising their concerns over ICANNs pricingpolicy in their response to the draft RFP. Cardiff City Council announce support for dotCYM We would like to thank Cardiff City Council, and Deputy Leader Cllr NeilMcEvoy in particular for announcing their support for the dotCYM bid (seewww.cardiff-info.com/content.asp?id=7952&d1=0 and the Western Mails reportatwww.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/2009/01/24/council-backs-cym-domain-campaign-91466-22766480/).Support from the capital city of Wales shows that the benefits of a Welshdomain are increasingly widely recognised. Sin Jobbins, dotCYMs ChiefExecutive, says that It will be a way for local businesses in Cardiff toshow they're part of the fabric of Cardiff life. This is a very gooddecision for Cardiff business, society and the status of Cardiff as thecapital of Wales. Membership dotCYM would like to thank all those who took up the opportunity ofbecoming members of dotCYM. Because of time constraints with responding toICANN and developing the business case, we havent taken as much time ofthis side of the bids work as we would have liked! However, you will behearing from us in more detail in the very near future. We are now takingadvice regarding the most effective structures for making sure that ourmembers play a genuine and practical part in running dotCYM, and for thetime being are not accepting new members. Gordon Brown: Digital technology as important as roads The Westminster Government has said that all homes should have access to2Mbps broadband by 2012, in order to help secure a competitive low carboneconomy. Gordon Brown said that Every aspect of our lives... will bedependent on the services that the digital network provides and thatdigital technology is as important today as roads, bridges and trains werein the twentieth century. Westminster recognises that developing digitalinfrastructure is vital for any modern economy, which is why they have beenconsistently supportive of the dotCYM bid. The bid for .cym is in themainstream of future economic and social thought. Not having a Welshdomain in the 21st century would be as damaging as not having roads in the20th. Warm thanks to Tom Brooks After putting in an enormous amount of voluntary time helping to drive thedotCYM bid forwards, Tom Brooks has now stood down from the Board in orderto concentrate on his responsibilities with the Westminster AllParliamentary IT Committee and the All Party Communications Group, where heintends to continue to lobby for practical political support for the dotCYMbid. dotCYM would like to thank him for his huge commitment to the bid andhis extremely hard work on the fine detail of preparing our application toICANN. Diolch Tom. --If you do not want to receive any more newsletters, http://www.dotcym.org/cylchlythyr/lists/?p=unsubscribe&uid=dabc18786d405123bddbecf920bb577b To update your preferences and to unsubscribe visithttp://www.dotcym.org/cylchlythyr/lists/?p=preferences&uid=dabc18786d405123bddbecf920bb577bForward a Message to Someonehttp://www.dotcym.org/cylchlythyr/lists/?p=forward&uid=dabc18786d405123bddbecf920bb577b&mid=18 --Powered by PHPlist, www.phplist.com --

-- Please scroll down for English -- Annwyl Gefnogwr, Mae wedi bod yn amser hir ers i chi glywed oddi wrthym ni - dim oherwydd ini fod yn diogi, ond oherwydd i ni fod yn brysur iawn! Rydym wedi bod mewn trafodaethau manwl iawn gyda Llywodraeth y Cynulliad,ac rydym yn gobeithio y byddwn ni mewn sefyllfa i wneud datganiad amddyfodol y cais yn y dyfodol cymharol agos. Rydym wedi ein boddhau yn fawrgan y cefnogaeth rydym wedi derbyn oddi wrth Llywodraeth y Cynulliad ynddiweddar, ac rydym yn edrych ymlaen yn fawr iawn at fedru rhannu unionstrwythur y cais gyda'n holl gefnogwyr. Rydym hefyd wedi bod yn cymryd rhan yn y gwaith o ddatblygu sefydliadymbarel ar gyfer ceisiadau diwylliannol ac ieithyddol eraill o fewn Ewrop, bydd yn lobo ICANN am lefelau talu gwahanol ar gyfer ceisiadaudiwylliannol ac ieithyddol, a newidiadau hefyd i'r amserlen cyflwyno. Maecymhlethdodau hawlfraint yn arafu'r broses yn gyffredinol, ond nid yw'rcymhlethdodau hyn yn berthnasol i geisiadau diwylliannol ac ieithyddol, felly dylai fod modd gweithredu yn llawer gynt o ran ein ceisiadau ni. Bydd ECLID, y sefydliad ymbarel, sydd yn cynnwys grwpiau yng Nghymru,Llydaw, Gwlad y Basg a Galicia, yn lobo Senedd Ewrop am eu cefnogaeth wrthfynegu'r pwyntiau yma i ICANN, ac am gefnogaeth ymarferol ariannol ar gyferyr elfen bwysig hon o'r agenda cydraddoldeb. Rydym wedi bod yn trafod sut i ddatblygu ein model aelodaeth ar batrwm GlasCymru, ac bellach yn credu bod gennym niferoedd digonol er mwyn rhedegdotCYM fel cwmni sydd yn berchen i'w aelodau ac yn medru ymateb yn gyflymac yn ddeallus mewn hinsawdd newidiol. Os nad ydych chi wedi dod yn aelodhyd yma, mae'n bosib y daw cyfleon eto yn y dyfodol, ond am y tro ni fyddwnyn derbyn ceisiadau aelodaeth newydd. Rydym wedi bod yn edrych yn fanwl iawn at fanylion y partneriaidtechnolegol bydd angen arnom ni er mwyn rhedeg y parth .cym, ac yn disgwylmedru gwneud datganiad ffurfiol ynghylch ein partneriaid unwaith byddgennym gytundeb cyfreithiol gyda Llywodraeth y Cynulliad o ran y strwythurariannu. Mae amserlen ICANN ar gyfer derbyn ceisiadau bellach wedi llithro i fisRhagfyr 2009, ond rydym yn credu na fydd y ceisiadau cyntaf yn cael euderbyn tan chwarter calendr cyntaf 2010. Fel bydd llawer ohonoch chi yn eiddeall, mae hyn yn creu cymhlethdodau ychwanegol i dotCYM, ond rydym wediymateb trwy fod yn ofalus iawn gyda'n cyllid - mae'n bosib y bydd rhaid ini fedru talu am gyfnodau hirach o waith prosiect nag oeddwn ni'n disgwyl igychwyn. Diolch yn fawr iawn unwaith eto am eich cefnogaeth. Byddwn yn edrychymlaen at adael i chi wybod manylion y camau nesaf yn y broses hir honcyntaf bydd modd i ni wneud. Cofion cynnes, Sion Jobbinsar ran dotCYM Cyf. *** Dear Supporter, It's been a while since you've heard from us - not because we've beenslacking off, but because there's been a great deal going on! We have been in close negotiations with the Assembly Government, and areexpecting to be able to make a statement on the future of the bid in thenot too distant future. We have been greatly encouraged by the recentsupport we have received from the Assembly Government, and are lookingforward very much to being able to share the exact structure of the bidwith all our supporters. We have also been engaged in the development of an umbrella organisationfor European cultural and linguistic bids for top level domains, which isgoing to be lobbying ICANN for separate fee structures for cultural andlinguistic bids, as well as a separate timetable for such bids. Culturaland linguistic bids are free from the trademark complications which areslowing down the wider process of expanding the domain name space, andcould be processed far more quickly and efficiently. ECLID, the umbrellabody, which includes founding groups from Wales, Brittany, Basque Countryand Galicia is also going to engage in lobbying the European Parliament forsupport in expressing these views to ICANN, as well as practical financialsupport for this important part of the equality agenda. We have been developing our membership model on the pattern of Glas Cymru, and believe that we have reached sufficient numbers for running dotCYM as amember-owned organisation that is still able to respond quickly andintelligently to changing circumstances. If you have not become a member, there may be further opportunities in the future, but for the time being weare not accepting new applications. We have been looking closely at the technical partners we will require inorder to be able to run the .cym domain, and expect to be in a position tomake a formal announcement after we have a legal agreement for the fundingstructure in place with the Assembly Government. ICANN's timetable for accepting bids for new top level domains has slippedto December 2009, and we believe it is likely that actual applications willnot be made until the first calendar quarter of 2010. As many of you willunderstand, this creates extra complications for dotCYM, but we have dealtwith them by being extremely careful with our finances, which may need tocover longer periods of project work than originally thought. Thank you very much once again for your support. We will look forward toletting you know about the next steps in this bid as soon as we are in aposition to make that announcement. Warm regards, Sion Jobbinson behalf of dotCYM Cyf
