Playwright to success under the Convention Thermidor, the Directory, the Consulate and the Empire, Alphonse Martainville (1776-1830) had rallied early on the Bourbon cause and wrote from 1815 successively in Le Journal de Paris, La Gazette de France and The Daily before starting in January 1819 its own sheet, white Flag. In simple periodic brochure beginning to escape censorship, and daily newspaper in July 1819 ultra-conservative paper whose motto was "Long live the king ... still," White Flag waged a tough battle against Decazes; under Villèle still accused the government of weakness. At the end of 1822 Lamennais , famous since the publication of the first volume of his Essay on indifference in 1816 and had previously worked with the Registrar of Bonald and the Defender, became editor of the white flag; his pen, the newspaper becomes a formidable enemy of the government Villèle and Gallican Catholics. This campaign culminated August 22, 1823 in the famous Letter to the Grand Master of the University (Mgr Frayssinous), where the attack of teaching in state secondary schools served as a pretext to claim the independence of the church and freedom. There followed a series of trials; Lamennais was forced to leave the newspaper: he went to Switzerland and then to Rome. Villèle then pressured Martainville, which began in January 1824 his company newspaper; Baron Eckstein Comandita time now. But the white flag had lost all independence; reduced to the role of unofficial sheet Villèle, he did not even retained a thousand subscribers; having lost all rationale, it ceased publication on 1 February 1827.

May 16, 1829, Martainville, more or less biased by the Prince de Polignac, he published The Democrat, who resumed on 15 July the title of the white flag: it was, with the Gazette de France and The Daily, one of the few supporters Department of Ordinances. This newspaper published his latest issue July 26, 1830, the eve of the revolution; Martainville died a few days after finally sealed the fate of the white flag.
